When you work in the gaming industry, you will begin to see an alarming trend. There are so many hurting people, and so few of them are able to get help. I like what TakeThis is doing to raise not just awareness, but actual funding to get these gamers real help. It is time. Let's do this.
Take This, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit charity founded in 2013 by veteran games journalists Russ Pitts and Susan Arendt and mental health expert Dr. Mark Kline, Psy.D. following the tragic death of a colleague.
Its mission is to inform the geek and gamer communities about mental health issues, to provide education about mental disorders and mental illness prevention, and to reduce the stigma of mental illness.
Take This works with experts in the clinical mental health field to create powerful and positive advice for those dealing with mental health issues and their loved ones at www.takethis.org. Take This also shares the stories of healing and hope from prominent members of the geek community in the hopes that others might feel less alone.
Since 2013 Take This has worked with convention organizers to address mental health related issues and train convention staff in sensitivity and awareness of mental health issues. Take This has also hosted "AFK Rooms" at gaming conventions around the US, where convention attendees can take a break from the crowds, lines, noise and other stresses of a large convention and seek advice about mental health issues and treatment from licensed mental health care clinicians.
